While Kate Middleton, as impeccable as ever, represented the British royals at the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, Meghan Markle, from her home in Montecito, California, chose to celebrate the holiday in her own unique way: with green waffles.
The Duchess of Sussex took to Instagram to share how she treated her husband, Prince Harry, and their children, Archie and Lilibet, to a themed breakfast.
But it didn’t end there, as the star of the show was apparently a waffle iron with a very special sentimental value.
In a video reminiscent of her Valentine’s Day preparations—when she cut heart-shaped strawberries for her little ones—Meghan demonstrated how she prepared the batter, shaped the waffles, and served them. But what’s so special about a simple waffle iron? Well, it turns out it was a gift from Queen Elizabeth II herself.
As Prince Harry revealed during an interview on The Late Show with James Corden* his grandmother had asked him what Archie wanted for Christmas.
The answer was clear: “My grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas, and Meg said a waffle maker. She sent us a waffle maker for Archie. So now, for breakfast, Meg makes a beautiful organic mix in the waffle maker.”
Furthermore, Harry added that his son, less than two years old at the time, “loves” the waffle maker: “Archie wakes up in the morning and goes, ‘waffle.’”
Meghan capped off the post with a “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” message alongside a green heart emoji, showing the finished breakfast with strawberries accompanying the waffles. Everything looked idyllic, but, as always, there were those who found details to criticize.
Why people criticized Meghan Markle’s green waffles
On the internet, nothing escapes scrutiny. Despite Meghan’s efforts to present an image of normality and everyday life, some social media users were quick to point out something suspicious.
According to The New York Post, the controversy arose because, allegedly, the waffles Meghan presented as “homemade” did not match the waffle iron pattern shown in the video.
“Did you see that what she put in the maker is not how the waffle would [look] if she indeed cooked them,” wrote one user.
Another, indignant, commented, “I immediately saw the difference when I watched the video. I couldn’t understand why someone would lie about waffles. What kind of person needs to do that?”
And to top it off, one more remarked: “She posted a video of herself using a waffle maker with a divider, yet the so-called ‘homemade’ waffle she presented looked exactly like a store-bought one, missing the dividers that should have been there.”
Exaggeration? Waffle conspiracy? Or just a little creative license on Meghan’s part? What’s certain is that, once again, the Duchess of Sussex finds herself at the center of controversy.
