When Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties in 2020 alongside her husband Prince Harry, it marked the start of a new chapter for the former actor – a return to Hollywood with ambitions to produce meaningful film and television content focused on celebrating love in all its forms.
Over the past two years, the Duchess of Sussex has outlined exciting plans for Archewell Productions in several high-profile interviews, affirming her passion for spotlighting ‘love stories’ and even hinting at a nostalgic revival of the romantic comedy genre on screens.
Meghan Markle’s Hollywood plans
In her first major interview since leaving the royal family, speaking to The Cut in August 2022, Meghan first revealed plans to develop film and TV projects with Harry that are inspired by “our love story.”
She said sharing the love narrative that connected them with the public is “the piece of my life I haven’t been able to share” as an actor previously.
“I hope that is the sentiment that people feel when they see any of the content or the projects that we are working on.”
Two months later, Meghan elaborated in an interview with Variety, stating that “so much” of her and Harry’s perspective is seen “through our love story” and they want to channel that viewpoint into their production work.
She talked of love “whether it be partner love, self-love, the love of community and family.”
Meghan also told Variety she would “love to see the return of the romantic comedy”, naming ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and Julia Roberts movies among her repeat favorites.
“We need to see those again,” she said, hinting at the kind of uplifting content on the slate for Archewell Productions.
Most recently, on the red carpet of Variety’s Power of Women gala in November 2023, Meghan affirmed they have “so many exciting things on the slate” at Archewell that she “can’t wait” to announce.
“We want to think about how we can evolve from that same space and do something fun! It doesn’t always have to be so serious.”
While setbacks have plagued the Sussexes’ return to Hollywood so far, Meghan has optimistically asserted that the future holds meaningful films and shows that focus on the diverse power of love.
