The news about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s eviction from Frogmore Cottage took many by surprise. King Charles III has decided to leave the Duke and Duchess of Sussex without an official residence in the UK.
Frogmore Cottage had been a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth II to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who after an expensive refurbishment lived only a few months in it as they announced they would be relinquishing their official duties to the monarchy. The house had become their refuge when they returned to England after moving to the United States.
Frogmore Cottage history
The incredible property is located on the grounds of Frogmore House, in the gardens adjoining Windsor Castle. It is a traditional 17th-century English country house that, for 300 years, has been the retreat of the British royal family.
In 1792 it became an official residence when Queen Charlotte bought it. It received its name because it was located in an area where, originally, there were many frogs. It was built years after the first house called Frogmore House.
The magical residence was the site chosen by Meghan and Harry to announce their engagement in 2017. They held their wedding reception there in May 2018.
