On a day like today, 24 years ago, the then Prince Edward married Sophie Rhys-Jones.
Currently, this couple is known as the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, after the death of the Queen and her husband, and are consolidated as the most stable of the monarchy.
The Queen’s youngest son married at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, in a low-key celebration attended by some 500 guests. After a five-year courtship, the couple finally said “I do”.
Sophie and Edward had two children: Lady Louise Windsor, who was born in 2003, and James, who was born in 2007 and now holds the title of Earl of Wessex, inherited from his father.
Prince Edward and Sophie’s Anniversary
The couple, who like many others have had their difficulties, met in 1987 when Sophie was working in public relations for Capital Radio.
However, six years later, Edward made the decision to court her.
According to the Daily Mail, their first date took place at a tennis match and later at a dinner at Buckingham Palace.
The relationship between Edward and Sophie was consolidated when he invited her to attend his family’s royal weddings, such as that of the queen’s cousin, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, or that of Lady Sarah Chatto, daughter of Princess Margaret.
On a vacation in the Bahamas, Edward finally popped the big question to Sophie and, in January 1999, they publicly announced their engagement.
As time went on, Sophie took an important place in the royal family, even being a great companion to the queen in her later years.
It is said that the duchess became Elizabeth II’s favorite daughter-in-law and they shared great moments together.
