Prince William hinted that Prince George might follow in his footsteps as a pilot, like him and Prince Harry.
On May 21, during a garden party at Buckingham Palace, Prince William spoke about George, his 10-year-old son, and mentioned that George might become a pilot someday.
Prince George’s Future as a Pilot
At the garden party, Prince William chatted with Squadron Leader Chrissie Lacey from RAF Coningsby. Prince said George would love to visit because he is a “potential pilot in the making.”
Last summer, Prince George was excited during a visit to the Royal International Air Tattoo, the world’s largest military air show, at RAF Fairford.
The family enjoyed the trip, which was a school holiday treat for the kids.
Prince George had also visited the Royal International Air Tattoo in 2016 when he was just 2 ½ years old. Even then, he could identify parts of planes.
Flight Lieutenant Jim Hobkirk mentioned that George knew about helicopters and could identify the “tail rotor,” showing his early technical knowledge.
Prince William and Princess Kate have a strong connection with the Royal Air Force (RAF).
William served as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot from 2010 to 2013. Both William and Kate have RAF-related titles.
In August 2023, King Charles named William as the Royal Honorary Air Commodore of RAF Valley and Kate as the Royal Honorary Air Commodore of RAF Coningsby.
The RAF has a significant history in their family. Kate’s grandfather, Captain Peter Middleton, served in the British air force and even worked with Prince Philip.
Many men in the royal family, including King George VI, have trained as pilots.
Prince Harry, William’s brother, also served as a helicopter pilot in the British Army. He flew training missions and combat missions in Afghanistan.
Harry received his Flying Wings in 2010, and his father, King Charles, awarded them. Charles also awarded William’s flying wings in 2008.
Recently, King Charles gave Prince William a new military title, Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps, which has a close connection to Prince Harry’s former regiment.
Harry trained as an Army Air Corps pilot in 2009 and served until 2014. He lost his honorary military titles when he and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties in 2020.
