In a moment that has resurfaced on social media, a clip of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s warm welcome in Fiji during their 2018 royal tour has gone viral on TikTok.
The video captures the Duke and Duchess of Sussex being greeted by excited crowds and a hail of flashbulbs as they arrived at the University of the South Pacific in Suva.
Fans on the platform praised the couple for their “warmth, goodness, kindness, and honesty,” qualities they feel make Harry and Meghan relatable and inspiring figures.
Harry and Meghan Markle’s visit to Fiji
The couple’s South Pacific tour in October 2018 marked their first overseas engagement since their wedding and came shortly after the announcement that they were expecting their first child, Archie.
It was a significant moment in their early days as newlyweds, and the warm reception they received underscored the public’s enthusiasm for them as a royal couple.
Posted with the caption, “They’re the truth,” the clip garnered over 568,500 views and sparked affectionate comments from fans, with one user expressing:
“I love this! Seeing them on the balcony at the end was awesome. The royal family truly lost a couple who would have made the monarchy stronger.”
During this time, the Duke and Duchess were at the height of their popularity, drawing admiration for their charisma and the genuine connection they seemed to have with people.
However, as Harry later shared in his memoir, Spare, tensions were already simmering behind the scenes with other royal household members, particularly those in the office he and Meghan once shared with Prince William and Princess Kate at Kensington Palace.
According to Harry, these tensions contributed to what he described as “rival camps” within the palace staff.
The visit to Fiji wasn’t without its moments of drama. One memorable incident occurred at a marketplace in Suva, where Meghan was scheduled to meet female vendors. Instead of the planned 15 minutes, she spent only eight before her security team ushered her out.
Initially, palace sources cited “security concerns” as the reason for the hasty exit. However, the explanation later shifted to “crowd management issues,” while some insiders suggested Meghan’s discomfort with the visible branding of the UN Women organization, with whom she had previously worked, may have played a role.
Journalist Valentine Low, covering the tour for The Times, later detailed the incident in his book Courtiers. He explained that Meghan had requested there be no UN Women logos visible at the event.
Despite the efforts of her team to honor her request, Meghan ultimately found herself surrounded by UN Women branding. At one point, the duchess was reportedly seen whispering to an aide with a strained smile, saying, “I can’t believe I’ve been put in this situation.”
This tour, while marked by enthusiastic receptions from the public, also highlighted early signs of the struggles Meghan and Harry faced within the royal institution.
