Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have voiced their strong disapproval of Mark Zuckerberg’s recent decision to eliminate the fact-checking program on Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have publicly condemned the policy change, expressing their concerns over its potential global repercussions.
Harry and Meghan Criticize Mark Zuckerberg
In a statement released on their Archewell website, the couple highlighted their alarm at Meta’s move, stating, “It doesn’t matter whether your views are left, right or somewhere in between — the latest news from Meta about changes to their policies directly undermines free speech.”
They emphasized that allowing more abuse and normalizing hate speech serves to silence, not foster, genuine speech and expression.
Harry and Meghan, parents to Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, pointed out that Zuckerberg’s decision could have far-reaching effects, especially for those still recovering from or currently suffering the negative impacts of social media.
Elimination of fact checking
Meta originally introduced the fact-checking program to combat the spread of misinformation on its platforms.
However, Zuckerberg justified its removal as part of a broader strategy to promote “free expression,” citing the 2024 election as a crucial cultural moment necessitating this change.
The Sussexes strongly disagreed with this rationale, arguing that it contradicts Meta’s mission to “build human connection.”
They believe the new policy prioritizes users who spread hate, lies, and division, ultimately at the expense of everyone else.
Harry and Meghan also expressed concern about Meta abandoning its commitments to diversity and equity, warning that this would foster an environment where abuse and hate speech can silence entire communities that are crucial to a healthy democracy.
Their statement called for Meta to reconsider and reinstate protective policies for all users.
They also urged leaders across various industries to uphold integrity and public safety in online spaces, praising those who resist the pressure to conform to harmful practices.
