In 1997, Prince Harry met the Spice Girls.

During a visit of the British royal family to South Africa, Prince Harry met one of the most famous groups of that time, the Spice Girls: Posh, Sporty, Baby, Ginger and Scary.

The five most attractive women in the music industry met a little 13-year-old Harry, who looked smiling in the photos, but deep down he was sad, his mother had recently died.

When did Prince Harry meet the Spice Girls?

The meeting between Harry and the Spice Girls took place in South Africa, during a concert, held in honor of activist Nelson Mandela. Specifically, on November 1, 1997. The Duke of Sussex was not alone, he was accompanied by his father the then Prince of Wales.

The husband of Meghan Markle, tells in one of his episodes of his memoir ‘Spare’ how was his meeting with the ‘Spice Girls’, who were the main artists of the concert.

Harry recalls that that day was his first public appearance two months after the tragic death of his mother, Princess Diana, which occurred on August 31, 1997.

The Duke of Sussex reveals that on that day he did not want to disappoint anyone, he knew that many people were curious to know how he felt.

“I remember stepping on the red carpet, drawing a smile on my face…”, wrote the husband of Meghan Markle.

On the red carpet Harry meets the band members, Victoria Beckham (Posh) stepped forward and held his hand, while Emma Bunton (Baby) kept pinching the prince’s cheeks.

However, Harry revealed that it was Geri Halliwell (Ginger) with whom he felt the most connection.

The Duke of Sussex recalls his surprise at being at a concert with his father, who is notorious for not being a pop culture fan. For Harry it was surreal to see his dad moving to the rhythm of the music, “it was impossible to believe” said the father of Archie and Lilibet.

Controversial meeting between Charles and the Spice Girls

That same year there was another controversial episode between the Spice Girls and the then Prince Charles and it was all caught on video.

The popular girl group broke protocol: Geri and Mel B kissed Charles on the cheeks and another dared to slap him on the butt surprising everyone present.
