Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh lived 99 years, 69 of them as the consort of Queen Elizabeth II. Throughout his life he left a good collection of memorable quote , some funny and others controversial and polemic.
Philip had the reputation of being a blunt and blunderer. On more than one occasion he wanted to be so scathing, but it was bad, at other times he has been funny.
Prince Philip funny quotes
“You look like you’re wearing your pajamas to bed.”
The phrase was said to the president of Nigeria in 2003. The reason was because the African leader was wearing the traditional costume of his country, consisting of toga and djellaba.
“Are we going to need earplugs?”
In 2002, Philip was to be present to hear Madonna sing ‘Die another day’. Far from being pleased, he threw out that famous phrase.
“British women can’t cook.”
When the Duke said this phrase he was at the Women’s Institute of Scotland. For many this English joke was quite derogatory and sexist. But Philip received a response from one person in the audience, “You’re a woman, aren’t you?”.
“Can you fix my DVD?”
That was the question the Duke asked actress Cate Blanchett in 2008 upon learning that she ‘worked in the film industry’.
“This looks like the kind of thing my son brings home from arts and crafts class.”
In 1965 he visited an exhibition of Ethiopian art and apparently didn’t like it very much because on his way out he blurted out that phrase.
“If you stay here much longer you will go home with your eyes squinted.”
He made that comment during an official visit to China in 1986, where he met with a group of Britons studying in the Asian giant.
“If they’ve been around this music, there’s no question why they’ve gone deaf.”
The Duke of Edinburgh could think of nothing else but to make that comment on a visit to Wales, as some hearing impaired children stood next to a Caribbean band.
