Meghan Markle’s time with the British royal family was short, but it left an indelible mark.
Her marriage to Prince Harry in May 2018 catapulted her to fame within the monarchy.
Meghan’s rapid rise within the royal family caught the attention of Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband, who gave her a special nickname.

It is reported that Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away in 2021, had reserved a nickname for Meghan Markle that reflected his perception of her.
This nickname paralleled another American historical figure who also married a royal.
Prince Philip was “wary” of the former Suits actress and found similarities to Wallis Simpson, the wife of former King Edward VIII, who became the Duke of Windsor after his abdication in 1936.
While the comparison between Meghan and Wallis Simpson, both American divorcees who married British princes, is not new, Philip reportedly went further by dubbing Meghan in a way he never used in her presence.
Ingrid Seward, author and royal commentator, revealed that Prince Philip saw “similarities” between Meghan and the late Duchess of Windsor, so he gave her a nickname that links the two.
Speaking to GB News, she said: “I think Prince Philip was very wise about people and he didn’t always see the bad in them, he tried to see the good in them. I think he just couldn’t get away from the fact [of the] similarities between Meghan and Harry and Edward and Mrs. Simpson.”
“There are so many similarities, which is why he used to call her the Duchess of Windsor, I mean, not to her face. We used to call her dow – DoW [the abbreviation for Duchess of Windsor].”
In his revealing book, “My Mother and I,” Seward shared that the late Prince Philip was “cautious” about Meghan Markle.
He also clarified that the Queen’s husband was one of the few cautious ones to succumb to Meghan’s charms.
Furthermore, Seward revealed that Prince Philip considered Meghan a “disruptive” figure within the royal family, while his wife, the late Queen Elizabeth II, remained optimistic and had “high hopes” for Meghan.
But time seems to have proven the late Philip right, as Meghan and Harry eventually distanced themselves from the royal family in a move similar to that of Wallis Simpson.
