Prince William and Kate Middleton have spent 13 years together in marriage, and despite the public scrutiny they face as the future king and queen consort, experts believe that their playful nature is the key to their strong bond.
According to Christopher Andersen, author of “The King,” one of the essential aspects of their relationship is their shared sense of humor.
William once described Kate’s sense of humor as “naughty,” while he referred to his own as “dirty.” He emphasized that this playful connection was one of the major factors that drew them together. Although they have made some adjustments for the sake of their three children, the couple still finds joy in making each other laugh.
Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Marriage
Andersen elaborated that William and Kate have shared their quirky sense of humor—reminiscent of Monty Python or Benny Hill—with their kids. Just like many parents, they often find themselves mediating disputes when their children fight over the remote control or when sibling teasing escalates into playful wrestling matches.
This playful spirit extends beyond their immediate family. Kate’s brother, James Middleton, shared on the “Walking the Dog” podcast that William would often make excuses to skip competitive game nights with the Middleton family.
“Competition runs in the royal blood,” Andersen noted, reflecting on the late Queen Elizabeth II’s love for spirited contests and how the royal family is no stranger to competitive activities.
Yet, the Middletons taught Kate that winning is crucial, which contrasts with William’s more laid-back attitude. Their competitive nature is evident in their various games—be it foot races, swimming contests, or card games—which can sometimes lead to intense moments at home.
Interestingly, it seems the family dynamic has a natural leader: Charlotte, their eldest daughter. Andersen mentioned that she is known as the “Louis-whisperer,” expertly guiding her younger brother, Louis, when he seeks attention in mischievous ways.
However, since Kate’s cancer diagnosis, the children have become more attuned to their mother’s need for peace and quiet. Despite this, their family life remains bustling with school activities, playdates, and birthday celebrations, providing a sense of normalcy that has been vital for Kate’s recovery.
Royal expert Hilary Fordwich pointed out that Kate grew up in a more ordinary setting compared to William. Her parents, who built their Party Pieces business, instilled in her the value of responsibility from a young age. As a result, Prince George has even taken on the task of cleaning the guinea pig’s cage, showcasing the family’s commitment to everyday responsibilities.
Richard Fitzwilliams, another royal expert, highlighted William’s efforts to create a normal life for his family. Since marrying Kate, he has worked hard to keep their family life grounded. Their mutual passion for sports has been an integral part of their family activities, adding an engaging twist to royal tours, where the couple has been seen competing in various sports.
With Kate now cancer-free, she has resumed her public engagements and private meetings. Broadcaster Helena Chard noted the family’s dedication to being hands-on parents, introducing their passions to their children.
“Princess Catherine and Prince William love sport and the great outdoors,” Chard said, emphasizing their down-to-earth nature and the renewed energy in their family life post-Kate’s health scare.
Recently, Kate showed her support for Prince Louis by cheering him on at a football match, much to the delight of fellow parents. Observing Charlotte’s nurturing attitude towards her brothers during events only adds to the warmth of their family dynamic.
Andersen previously remarked that it was Kate’s sporty personality that initially attracted William. Throughout her youth, she was an accomplished athlete in hockey, tennis, and skiing. Her cheerful demeanor and enthusiasm for sports set her apart from the rest of the royal family, making her a perfect fit for the role she embraces today.
