Prince William visited a construction site in West London on Wednesday to highlight the urgent need to prioritize mental health support and suicide prevention in the construction sector.
The visit coincided with World Suicide Prevention Day, which was commemorated on September 10.
Prince of Wales discusses suicide prevention in the construction industry
Tragically, suicide rates among construction workers are more than three times the national average.
In 2021 alone, 507 construction workers took their own lives, which equates to two suicides every working day.
Upon arriving at the site, Prince William engaged in candid discussions with workers about the mental health challenges they and their colleagues face.
He heard firsthand accounts of the immense pressures in the industry and the toll it can take.
“The Duke was clearly moved by the workers’ stories,” said a royal aide. “He applauded their courage in speaking openly about mental health, which is still a taboo subject in many workplaces.”
According to mental health experts at the leading charity Mates in Mind, proactive and holistic approaches are needed to improve wellbeing across the construction sector.
Prince William learned about their vital work empowering employers, contractors, and policymakers to drive positive change.
Over the past few years, Mates in Mind has partnered with hundreds of construction companies, including Mace which is building the project visited by His Royal Highness.
The Prince’s visit shone a spotlight on this critical issue. “He will continue championing mental health support, especially for those working in high-risk industries,” said a Kensington Palace spokesperson. “The Duke believes much more can be done to prevent suicide and crisis situations through early intervention.”
With his profile and platform, Prince William hopes to spark a wider dialogue surrounding mental health.
If more construction firms follow the lead of Mates in Mind supporters, it could save many lives. As one worker told the Prince, “Knowing your employer has your back makes all the difference.”
