A new rumor runs through the corridors of Buckingham Palace. King Charles would be considering naming his granddaughter, Princess Charlotte as the new Duchess of Edinburgh, the royal title held until his death by Prince Philip.
With the death of the Queen’s husband on April 9, 2021, it was thought that the title would be held by Prince Edward, brother of King Charles and Earl of Wessex, but now it seems that the King has changed his mind.
Princess Charlotte duchess of Edinburgh?
In King Charles’ attempt to give a radical turn to the British crown, he would have decided to give more prominence to his grandchildren. Although there is nothing official yet, as the British press has revealed, Charles III’s wish is to grant this dukedom to his granddaughter Charlotte, 7 years old.
The monarch wants to modernize his time at the head of the British crown, and what better than taking such a transgressive step than making a woman Duchess of Edinburgh. In addition to giving her greater relevance in her position in the line of succession to the throne only behind her father and her brother George.
According to the Mail on Sunday newspaper, this decision would be very well received by the English people, although not so much by Edward who expected to assume that title automatically after he took his father’s place when he decided to retire from public life.
However, the Duchy of Edinburgh would not pass to William and Kate’s daughter immediately. Charlotte will become duchess when she comes of age or marries and her grandfather grants her the Duchy of Edinburgh as a wedding gift. A title that would be added to that of Princess of England she has held since the time of her birth.
In his role as grandfather, Charles is very different from his role as father. According to Prince Harry’s revelations, the king was a serious and strict man who was not even able to hug his young son when he told him that his mother had died. However, as a grandfather, he is quite the opposite.
People close to the monarch claim that as a grandfather he is “kind and kissy”. He loves spending time with George, Charlotte, and Louis, and suffers greatly from being away from Archie and Lilibet. The British press points out that Charlotte is his favorite, his weakness.
