Three of Princess Diana’s dresses were recently auctioned and there is no doubt, whoever has a Lady Di’s dress has a great treasure.
Decades after her tragic death, the iconic style of the Princess of Wales continues to captivate millions.
Proof of this is the recent auction sale of three of Diana’s dresses for over $1 million, proving that her treasures are still highly coveted by collectors and admirers alike.
Princess Diana’s dresses auctions
In June 1997, Princess Diana auctioned 79 of her dresses at Christie’s New York headquarters to raise money for charity.
Among the auction audience was Ellen Petho, an interior designer from Michigan who left Christie’s halls owning five of Diana’s gowns and $175,000 short in her bank account.
Twenty-six years later, Petho’s widower auctioned off three of the five dresses at U.S. house Julien’s Auctions and took home more than $1.5 million, nearly ten times what Petho originally paid!
Two of the three dresses auctioned were created by designer Catherine Walker and the other dress was by designer Bruce Oldfield.
- The black and white striped dress that Diana wore to a private function ($508,000).
- Silk dress in black and green that she wore with a tiara to a gala banquet in Toronto in 1991 ($571,500)
- Red dress the princess wore to the London premiere of the film When Harry Met Sally in 1989 ($571,500)
Diana’s closet continues to break sales records at auction. Earlier this year, the iconic midnight blue Victor Edelstein gown she wore for her White House portrait sold for a whopping $604,800 at Sotheby’s, five times the estimate.
Even sportswear, such as his Virgin Atlantic sweatshirt, sold for tens of thousands of dollars.
This month, Sotheby’s will auction another historic royal gown: the emerald Murray Arbeid that Diana wore for Prince Edward’s birthday. The estimate has already reached six figures.
