A few weeks ago an unpublished portrait of Princess Diana was revealed as part of an exclusive exhibition of royals at Kensington Palace. As a result of this photograph, Lady Di’s official photographer made an unexpected confession about the hair of William and Harry‘s mother.
The exhibition ‘Life Through A Royal Lens’ has as a highlight the portrait of a young Princess Diana, taken in 1988 by David Bailey, the photographer himself was responsible for revealing the best kept secret of the former wife of Prince Charles.
“Princess Diana had terrible hair. It was like that of a plastic doll,” confessed the 83-year-old photographer in an interview for a British media.
Bailey added that Diana’s hair was like that because of the large amount of fixative the princess used to keep her mythical hairstyle intact. The voluminous layered hair became the princess’s trademark for years.
Another detail he revealed is that during the session his assistant inadvertently dropped a spotlight on the princess’s head and at one point he panicked. However, Diana took it with total naturalness.
“Lady Di did not attach any importance to what happened and simply shrugged her shoulders and said, “Don’t think about it, it was an accident,” she assured.
He also recounted the directions he gave the princess so that she would relax and the poses would be fresh and natural.
Bailey was not only in charge of capturing Princess Diana’s image, he is also a prominent photographer in the fashion and film industry, even Queen Elizabeth II herself has posed for his lens.
