In an unprecedented gesture, the Consell Insular de Mallorca is preparing to bestow special recognition on Princess Leonor de Borbón.
The initiative, proposed by the National Monarchic Sisterhood of Spain, seeks to name the heir to the throne as “adopted daughter” of the emblematic Balearic island.
This distinction not only highlights the royal family’s close ties to Mallorca but also celebrates the affection and admiration the local community feels for the young princess.
Princess Leonor is an adopted daughter of Mallorca.
The nomination proposal has been presented to all political parties represented in the Consell Insular, obtaining their unanimous support.
According to José Fernández, president of the National Monarchic Brotherhood of Spain, the process has been developed in a “friendly” and cooperative atmosphere.
The Consell de Mallorca, composed of 33 consellers, is preparing to hold a vote in an upcoming plenary session, scheduled for May or June.
Although the pro-independence party ‘Més per Mallorca’ will abstain due to its ideological principles, its decision will not prevent the approval of the initiative.
When will Leonor receive the recognition?
Once approved, the official awarding of the distinction will take place during the celebration of the Diada de Mallorca, on September 12.
This date commemorates the entry of King Jaume I into Madina Mayurqa in 1229 and has recently been established as the new date for the celebration of the Diada.
The Royal House has been informed of the initiative and, as confirmed by the president of the Brotherhood, “we have sent a communiqué to the King’s House. They are aware of it”.
This gesture not only honors Princess Leonor but also strengthens the ties between the Spanish monarchy and the island of Mallorca.
The distinction as “adopted daughter”
The distinction of “adopted daughter” is traditionally awarded to illustrious personalities who have made a significant contribution to culture, society, or the welfare of the community.
In 2016, novelist and Nobel Prize winner Camilo José Cela received the same honor, demonstrating the prestige associated with this recognition.
Mallorca has been a recurring holiday destination for the royal family for years, forging a special bond with the island.
The appointment of Princess Leonor as an “adopted daughter” is a sign of her bond with the community.
