Princess Leonor of Spain, firstborn of King Felipe VI, is preparing for an important milestone in her military life.
After ten and a half months of intense training, Princess Leonor will graduate and move on to the next stage of her military training.
Princess Leonor finishes her first year of military training as ensign
Next Wednesday, her father, King Felipe VI, will present her with the office of ensign of the Spanish Army, a recognition that marks the end of her first year of training at the General Military Academy (AGM) in Zaragoza.
At the end of August, she will enter the Navy Academy as a frigate ensign, and will then continue her training at the Air Academy.
Military Training of Princess Leonor in Zaragoza
Leonor’s entry into the AGM on 17 August 2023 was a memorable moment.
Accompanied by her parents, Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, the young princess was seen carrying a wheeled suitcase, ready to begin her journey into military life.
Shortly after, on October 31, she celebrated her coming of age and took the oath of allegiance to the Constitution in Congress, an act that underlines the continuity of the Crown and its commitment to Spain.
During her stay in Zaragoza, Princess Leonor has lived significant experiences that have been immortalized in photographs.
From her first images in uniform, the swearing in of the flag before her parents, to her debut parading down the main avenue of the academy and her offering to the Virgin of Pilar, patron saint of Latin America.
The princess has also actively participated in military maneuvers, wearing camouflage face paint, carrying a rifle and crawling on the ground like any other cadet.
She has also enjoyed leisure time with her classmates in the center of Zaragoza, visiting university bars and celebrating her birthday at a hamburger restaurant.
Two more years of military training
Leonor still has two more years of military training before enrolling in university.
Her time as a midshipman will be completed in January on the training ship Juan Sebastián Elcano. Although it has not yet been confirmed whether he will complete the full six-month voyage or just part of it.
In the 2025-2026 academic year, she will complete her training at the Air Academy.
At the conclusion of her training, Leonor will lead her promotion to the rank of lieutenant of Land and Air, as well as naval ensign, following in the footsteps of her father, Felipe VI, who also trained in the three armies before beginning his university studies.
This path not only prepares Princess Leonor for her future responsibilities as heir to the throne, but also reinforces her commitment and dedication to Spain, just like her father and previous generations of royalty.
