Princess Leonor and the training ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” have arrived in Tenerife, marking the first stop of the heiress’ training cruise.
This Thursday, January 16, the midshipmen and their instructors remain at anchor off the coast of Igueste de San Andrés, and on Friday the ship will dock at the Dársena de los Llanos in the capital of Tenerife, where it will remain until Monday, January 20.
Princess Leonor’s First Stop in Tenerife
In the port of Tenerife, everything is ready for the arrival of the “Juan Sebastián de Elcano”. Not only because of the presence of Princess Leonor on board, but also because the ship’s stay will coincide with a varied cultural agenda and different activities.
These include two open days for those who wish to visit the ship.
Additional Security Measures
With the future queen on board, strict security measures have been implemented.
The Maritime Service (SEMAR) of the Civil Guard in Tenerife guarantees the integrity of the training ship and its crew.
One of the additional precautions is to restrict any approach to the anchorage point in the north of the island.
Security in the port area will be noticeable from this Friday, with increased measures once the ship docks, especially during open days.
A security perimeter has already been established in the Dársena de los Llanos.
Activities on dry land
Once docked, Leonor and her companions will have the opportunity to set foot on dry land for the first time on their voyage, participating in various cultural and professional events in Tenerife.
This compact group will be visible in the streets of the capital, as was the case in Cadiz and San Fernando.
Next stops
After Tenerife, the “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” will set sail for its next destination in the Canary Islands, specifically Las Palmas.
There, several events and organized visits will take place at the Naval Base.
This will be the second city of the eleven that are part of the ship’s itinerary, which includes stops in Salvador de Bahía, Montevideo, Punta Arenas, Valparaíso, Lima, Panama City, Cartagena de Indias, Santo Domingo and New York, where the ship will dock in early June to culminate this international cruise.
Initial Challenges
The first days of the voyage between Cadiz and Tenerife have been challenging due to the bad weather that accompanied the midshipmen.
However, on the coast of Tenerife, Leonor and her companions will be able to enjoy several days on dry land and the warmth of the citizens, who are waiting with great expectation for their arrival at the port this Friday, as reflected in the local press.
