Leonor of Borbón By Robert Marquez

A Glimpse of Princess Leonor’s Jewelry Collection: Modern and Symbolic Pieces

Crown Princess Leonor, as the future queen of Spain, is not only destined to occupy a throne, but also to inherit a legacy of jewelry pieces that have been passed down from generation to generation within the Spanish royal family.

Although the royal jewelry box that will one day be at her disposal includes tiaras and jewels of enormous historical and economic value, the 19-year-old princess has begun to build her own collection with simple, modern-style pieces that reflect her personality.

Leonor has shown a growing taste for jewelry, something she probably inherited from her grandmother, Queen Sofia, and her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria Eugenia, both great admirers of jewelry.

In her public appearances, the princess has worn some of these personal accessories and has also borrowed pieces from her mother.

For example, during the recent ceremony in Oviedo, in which she was named Honorary Mayor and received the medal of honor of the Principality of Asturias, Leonor chose a pair of “Double Dagger” earrings by Gold & Roses, a piece from Queen Letizia’s jewelry box.

In addition, the steel ring she wore on her right hand caught the eye, a modern design with waves, which has become a trend among young women and demonstrates the princess’s taste for current fashion.

Another of her personal jewels is a ring she wore during the confirmation of Infanta Sofia. It is a fine and delicate piece, with a small square stone in the center.

According to jewelry expert Iñaki Torres, it could be a piece of costume jewelry, which fits with the current style of the princess, who prefers to avoid excessively expensive jewelry and opts for discreet designs, mostly borrowed from her mother or made of accessible materials.

Over the summer, Princess Leonor frequently wore a resin necklace with a violet flower pendant, a piece she paired with another ring that nods to the Greek roots of her paternal grandmother, Queen Sofia.

This ring, known as a “Greek ring” or “nazar”, is an amulet against the evil eye and shows Leonor’s personal touch in her selection of jewelry.

One of the necklaces that has generated the most comments is the one Leonor wore at her graduation from UWC Atlantic College.

It is a golden chain with the word “love” in Arabic, or “alhubu”, accompanied by a small diamond. This detail was interpreted by many as a possible gift from Prince Moulay Hassan of Morocco, a young man supposedly romantically interested in the princess. However, there is no evidence of any kind of relationship between the two.

What is certain is that both Leonor and her sister have studied Arabic since they were children, so the language is part of their knowledge along with others such as English, Catalan and Basque.

In one of her most recent appearances, during the 2023 Princess of Girona Awards, Leonor debuted earrings by CH Carolina Herrera, from the “Rosetta” collection.

This design, rhodium-plated and decorated with crystals, features a flower at the top and another at the bottom, with petals made in commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the Herrera house.

The princess even wore a small brilliant in the second hole of her left ear, a sign of her personal taste in jewelry.

In addition to these earrings and rings, she has also been seen wearing several bracelets, both fabric and steel, such as the double bracelet she wore in one of her summer appearances in Mallorca last year.

For now, Leonor’s jewelry box is made up of simple, modern pieces, perfectly suited to her age and personal style.

However, as a future queen, it is known that she will one day have the family’s historic jewels at her disposal, including those belonging to the “lote de pasar,” a collection of jewelry that Queen Victoria Eugenia arranged to be passed down from queen to queen in the Spanish line of succession.
