October will be a monumental month for the 17-year-old princess. On October 7, she will pledge allegiance to the Spanish flag alongside her classmates at the Military School.

Days later, Leonor will preside over the Princess of Asturias Awards on October 20 in Oviedo.

The month culminates with Leonor’s 18th birthday on October 31. She will take the oath of allegiance to the Constitution in the Congress of Deputies, accompanied by her parents, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, and her younger sister, Infanta Sofia.

Following this solemn ceremony, Leonor will receive the collar of the Order of Charles III from King Felipe at the Royal Palace.

The ornate necklace reflects Leonor’s readiness to assume the duties of the crown.

What is the Necklace of the Order of Charles III?

The historic piece was created by Charles III in 1771 on the occasion of the birth of his grandson. Later, in 1847, it became a civil order.

The necklace is composed of 41 linked medallions representing the white Maltese cross emblem of the order on a blue and red enameled background.

Those decorated with the Order of Charles III are honored for having rendered exceptional services to Spain.

It is awarded exclusively to members of the Royal Family, Heads of State, and illustrious Spanish citizens.

Leonor received the Order of the Golden Fleece from her father at the age of 13. The new necklace of the Order of Charles III will be her second decoration in her career as a heiress.

According to tradition, the necklace is only worn at major royal events or official portraits.

King Felipe VI has worn his Order of Charles III necklace on state occasions and in formal photographs.
