In an unexpected twist, Princess Leonor decided to leave the Naval Academy over the weekend to pay a surprise visit to her mother, Queen Letizia.
What seemed like a birthday without the company of her daughters, since the Infanta Sofia is in Wales studying for her baccalaureate, turned into a pleasant surprise when Leonor arrived unexpectedly in Madrid.
Princess Leonor’s trip to Madrid for Letizia’s birthday
As reported by Spanish journalist Concha Calleja on the program Fiesta, the princess took advantage of the days off she had to fly to Madrid to personally congratulate her mother on her 52nd birthday.
This show of affection surprised many, especially for the discretion with which she made the trip.
Calleja explained that the princess opted for a commercial flight, in an attempt to avoid being recognized.
“She was the last to board the plane and the first to get off. Only business class passengers saw her. She was accompanied by a woman, who could be her assistant, and her security team,” the journalist detailed.
The princess’s journey began in Marin, a town near her academy, from where she was transferred to Vigo airport to take the flight that would take her to the Spanish capital.
Now, the young heiress enjoyed a few days with her family before returning to Galicia to continue her military training at the naval academy.
Meeting between Leonor and King Juan Carlos
In addition to this surprise visit, in the same program there was also talk of an imminent reunion between the princess and her grandfather, King Emeritus Juan Carlos I.
It is speculated that during the next few weeks, the former monarch will travel to Galicia to attend the traditional regattas and could take the opportunity to see his granddaughter, whom he has not seen since October, when the two celebrated their last meeting on the occasion of Leonor’s birthday.
