This Tuesday, January 21, the training ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano”, with Princess Leonor on board, docked at the Arsenal of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
After spending a few days in Tenerife, the heiress and her fellow midshipmen set sail on Monday afternoon for this new island, before facing the vast Atlantic Ocean bound for Salvador de Bahia in Brazil.
Princess Leonor in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
As in Tenerife, the ship’s commander, Luis Carreras-Presas Do Campo, told the media present.
“We are delighted to be here, it is always a pleasure to come,” commented the commander.
He also explained that they are currently finishing the adaptation phase of the students, and once they set sail for Brazil on Thursday, the learning phase will begin, followed by the responsibility phase.
During their stay in Gran Canaria, Princess Leonor and her companions will have the opportunity to enjoy the island and participate in various official activities.
According to Luis Carreras-Presas Do Campo, they will visit the Navy’s maritime action ships and also enjoy leisure, cultural and gastronomic activities.
A Warm and expected welcome
The arrival of Princess Leonor to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria generated much expectation on the dock.
Following tradition, both the Princess and her companions approached the ship’s quay to greet the citizens who had gathered to welcome them.
Dressed in an elegant white uniform, consisting of pants, shirt and a cap that she took off to greet with it, Leonor showed a big smile to all present.
Programmed activities and open house day
The stay in Gran Canaria will include an open day this Wednesday.
According to the local press, on the previous visit to Tenerife, these days generated long lines of people eager to see the ship on which the heiress to the throne performs her training, although they were not able to see the Princess on that occasion.
Next destinations
As we have reported here at RoyalFamily.news, Gran Canaria is the second city of the eleven that are part of the itinerary of the “Elcano”.
After this stop, the ship will head for Salvador de Bahía, Montevideo, Punta Arenas, Valparaíso, Lima, Panama City, Cartagena de Indias, Santo Domingo and New York, where it will dock in early June to conclude this international cruise.
The first days of the voyage between Cadiz and Tenerife were challenging due to bad weather. However, on the coast of Gran Canaria, Leonor and her companions will be able to enjoy several days on land, learning more about the culture and gastronomy of the Canary Islands until Thursday, January 23.
