Princess Leonor of Spain, who is already preparing to assume her future role as queen, is currently in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on an intense journey that marks another step in her military training.
As we reported here on RoyalFamily.news, the young lady said goodbye to her parents, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, on January 13 and set sail aboard the Juan Sebastian Elcano, where she will spend six months sailing and sharing experiences with her shipmates.
However, the trip not only promises to be educational but also brings with it a little extra excitement. Why? Because the princess will be accompanied by an intriguing British sailor who has already caught the attention of the Spanish press.
Princess Leonor’s companions
The Spanish press is already talking about Joseph Bertelsen, a 26-year-old naval ensign and member of the crew of the Spanish training ship.
Joseph has been selected for this cultural exchange program between the Navies of the United Kingdom and Spain, a tradition that has been maintained since 1996.
This young man, trained at the prestigious Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, graduated in 2023 and, among his achievements, his degree in marine biology from West Sussex stands out.
But what has really given him an edge on this adventure is his fluency in Spanish.
Before embarking, Joseph expressed his enthusiasm for the experience.
And he won’t just be another shipmate; his role will include teaching English and being an ambassador for the British Navy among the Spanish.
As Leonor sails into a bright future full of responsibilities, it looks like she will also have fun learning and sharing moments with this charming ensign.
