Princess Leonor faces a significant challenge on her path to the Spanish throne: her first official trip abroad.
Despite having traveled to England in 2022 with her sister, Infanta Sofia, to enjoy a soccer match of the Spanish national team in the Women’s European Championship, this upcoming trip represents a more formal and significant commitment.
According to Spanish media reports, Princess Leonor will make this official visit to Portugal in July, underscoring the importance of strengthening ties between Spain and its European neighbors.
Princess Leonor’s trip to Portugal
Princess Leonor’s trip to Portugal will take her specifically to the capital, Lisbon. During her stay, she will be welcomed at the historic Belém Palace by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, highlighting the cordial relationship he maintains with the Princess’ parents, King Felipe and Queen Letizia.
This event, scheduled for July 12, will mark the Princess’ first international visit without the accompaniment of other members of the royal family.
However, she will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation, who will participate in a series of institutional meetings in Lisbon throughout the official visit.
The focus of the visit will be on environmental protection and marine conservation, reflecting the shared interests and collaboration between Portugal and Spain in these areas.
The choice of Portugal as the first international destination for the Princess of Asturias symbolizes and strengthens the close ties of friendship and proximity between the two nations.
The trip will last one day. In addition to her meeting with the Portuguese president, Princess Leonor will attend an event focused on the oceanic theme and will meet with young Spanish residents in Portugal at the Spanish embassy.
Princess Leonor will make this trip shortly after the Princess of Girona Awards ceremony. On July 9, along with her sister, she will attend a cultural event, followed by the awards ceremony the next day, an event that will be attended by her parents, King Felipe and Queen Letizia.
This trip not only represents an important step in her responsibilities as heiress but also underscores her commitment to issues of cultural and environmental relevance
