Although you probably didn’t know it, in the grounds of Balmoral Castle, in Scotland there is a huge pyramid. This royal castle was the same one where Queen Elizabeth died last September 8, 2022.
This property belongs to the royal family since the time of Queen Victoria. Her husband Prince Consort Albert bought it as a gift for his wife in 1852. Since then several members of the royal family have passed through the Castle.
Why is there a pyramid in the Castle of Balmoral?
One of the details that the castle possesses is the strange pyramid that is in the forest of the Castle.
Queen Victoria lived so many unforgettable moments in that place that after the death of her beloved husband she wanted to pay him a quite particular tribute. The monarch ordered the construction of the stone pyramid over 39 feet high.
Generally, this type of construction has always been associated with Egyptian culture, so the queen’s decision came as a surprise at the time.
The pyramid is located on the top of a mountain and in the middle of a forest. It can be seen in the county of Aberdeenshire, in the northeast of Scotland.
This structure can be visited by parking your car in the parking lot next to the Crathie Tourist Information Centre, on the A93 road as it passes through the village of Ballater. It is reached after a 30-minute walk in a southerly direction.
On the southwest side of the pyramid has an inscription dated August 21, 1862, and reads as follows: “To the beloved memory of Albert, the great and good Prince Consort. Erected by his brokenhearted widow, Victoria R”.
The curious Balmoral pyramid is not the only monument on that castle estate. There are a total of 11 burial mounds in the area, and not just funerary ones. Some were built to commemorate weddings. They have a Celtic appearance and are smaller in size than the pyramid.
The most recent were built in 2012 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the reign of Elizabeth II.
Balmoral Castle opens its doors
From this April 1 the Castle will reopen its doors to the public. Visitors will be able to enjoy an exhibition entitled “‘Monarchs at Balmoral’, which will show photographs of the Royal Family at the Aberdeenshire residence over the years.
This incredible property occupies 20,000 hectares of land, has 775 rooms (of which 52 are royal bedrooms) and 78 bathrooms.
