The British monarchy is modernizing and that will be evident in the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla on May 6.
The new monarchs will make major changes in the ceremony to leave behind the rigorous tradition and incorporate their respective families in the act. King Charles III wants his eldest grandson, Prince George to play an active role in the ceremony.
It will be a role that will also be unprecedented, since until now the heir children were limited to witnessing the coronation ceremony of their parents without taking part in it. Thus, in 1953 the then Prince Charles attended the coronation ceremony of his mother, Elizabeth II, but did not star in any moment. Camilla wants to do the same with her grandchildren.
Queen Camilla Parker’s grandchildren at the Coronation
Queen Camilla wants to incorporate her grandchildren to the coronation ceremony, as reported by the Times.
The wife of Charles III has decided that her five grandchildren will be the ones to hold the canopy that traditionally covers the consorts of the monarchs while they are anointed queens by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
This is an unprecedented decision, as until now it has been the norm for a group of duchesses to carry the canopy at the ceremony.
“The Queen Consort has said she doesn’t want duchesses. She would like her grandchildren to do it,” the Sunday Times quotes a source in the British royal household as saying.
Who are Camilla Parker’s grandchildren
Queen Camilla has five grandchildren aged between 15 and 13: Lola and Freddy are the children of Tom Parker Bowles, the Queen’s son, while Eliza and twins Louis and Gus are the children of Laura Lopes.
Camilla has two children from her marriage to Andrew Parker Bowles. Tom married in 2005 to Sara Buys, a magazine fashion editor, with whom he had Lola, born in 2007, and Freddy, who came into the world in 2010. The marriage dissolved in 2018 and Tom began dating journalist Alice Procope, who died in March 2021 at the age of 42, victim of cancer.
Meanwhile, Laura, Art expert and founder of her own gallery, married in May 2006 to Harry Lopes, accountant and former Calvin Klein underwear model. Together they have Eliza and twins Gus and Louis. Eliza was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Camilla’s grandchildren have a very close relationship with their grandmother whom they call Gaga.
Queen Camilla’s coronation
Details of Camilla’s coronation are slowly being revealed. Another difference between Camilla’s coronation and that of her predecessors will have to do with her crown, since while the previous consorts wore a new one made exclusively for them, Camilla will be crowned with the old crown of Mary of Teck.
