In recent weeks, Queen Camilla has often been seen carrying a new favorite accessory: a sand-colored, quilted leather handbag from the Parisian fashion house, Christian Dior.
This isn’t the first time Camilla has embraced Dior’s creations, as she has previously worn dresses and day outfits from the brand.
However, this particular handbag carries a poignant connection—it’s famously known as the Lady Dior, named in honor of Princess Diana.
Queen Camilla’s Handbag: Princess Diana’s Favorite
Camilla was seen with this handbag on various occasions, including a visit to Wales, Wimbledon, and Royal Ascot.
The Lady Dior bag, known for its boxy shape, quilted design, and distinctive metallic hardware with hanging letter charms spelling “DIOR,” became iconic thanks to Diana.
The handbag was first gifted to Diana during a 1995 visit to Paris. Bernadette Chirac, France’s first lady at the time, wanted to give Diana a special gift and chose a prototype bag from Dior, then known as the Chouchou.
Diana adored the bag, which was made of black leather with gold hardware, and it soon became one of her signature accessories. She was often seen with it, even carrying a deep-blue version to the Met Gala in New York in 1996.
After Diana’s tragic death in a car crash in 1997, Dior renamed the bag Lady Dior in her memory, a tribute to her maiden name, Lady Diana Spencer.
The brand proudly states on its website, “The House’s iconic Lady Dior bag is eternally linked to Lady Diana, Princess of Wales.”
Despite the fraught history between Diana and Camilla, Camilla’s use of the Lady Dior handbag has not stirred much controversy.
When Camilla married Charles in 2005, she chose not to adopt the title of Princess of Wales, out of respect for Diana’s memory.
There have been a few occasions where Camilla has worn items associated with Diana, such as a diamond brooch that once belonged to the late princess, which drew some negative attention.
Over the years, Camilla’s style has evolved significantly. She has transitioned from conservative, traditional attire to a more modern and elegant wardrobe. The Lady Dior handbag, a symbol of sophistication and history, complements her updated look.
