The coffin with the mortal remains of Queen Elizabeth has begun its journey. The vehicle carrying the monarch on her last tour of Scotland left this Sunday, September 11, 2022, from Balmoral Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
This is the first time the Queen’s coffin has been seen since news of her death broke last Thursday, September 8. This tour marked the first stage of the trip from Balmoral to London.
Transfer of Queen Elizabeth’s coffin
On its first journey, the coffin was draped with the royal standard of Scotland and a wreath with flowers that were specially selected from the Balmoral estate.
On the roadside dozens of people gathered to watch as Queen Elizabeth’s hearse passed through the small villages in Scotland.
The Queen’s only daughter, Princess Anne, also made the journey by car following the hearse. She was accompanied by her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence.
In the afternoon the coffin arrived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse where it will remain overnight Sunday. On Monday, the urn will be adorned with the Crown of Scotland and then taken in a solemn procession down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile to St. Giles’ Cathedral for a service.
On Tuesday Her Majesty’s remains will be flown to London and laid to rest at the Palace of Westminster. He will be there for about four days before his funeral at Westminster Abbey on September 19.
After the state funeral, the Queen’s coffin will travel to an engagement service at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Elizabeth II will then be laid to rest in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, next to her late husband, Prince Philip, who died in April 2021 at the age of 99.
