The chronic metatarsalgia that Queen Letizia suffers from is not the only problem she has on her feet. The monarch seems that she will have to do without, every day more, her long and beloved collection of high heels.

It is usual to see the consort with her high heels, but now she will have to start getting used to flat and more comfortable shoes like the ones she wore recently at the Spanish Embassy in Berlin.

What is Morton’s neuroma, Queen Letizia’s disease?

During a brief meeting of the Queen with journalists on Hispanic Day, Letizia revealed that she was diagnosed with Morton’s neuroma in her left foot.

Morton’s neuroma is a disease that causes thickening of nerve tissue in the foot.

“Morton’s neuroma is a painful condition that affects the metatarsal, most often the place between the third and fourth toes. It can feel like you’re standing on a rock in your shoe or a crease in your sock,” explains the Mayo Clinic.

The website adds that high-heeled shoes are the main cause of this problem. Morton’s neuroma has no outward symptoms, however, you may feel discomfort such as:

    • Sensation as if they had a stone in the shoe.
    • A pain or burning in the front part of the foot, it can extend to the toes.
    • Tingling or numbness in the toes.

In Queen Letizia it causes painful crises that cannot be prevented and cannot be operated on. The neuroma is located in an area with difficulty and surgery may not work.
