After her arrival in Cape Verde on March 24, Queen Letizia began her second day of activities with a full schedule of engagements.
The day started early at the Spanish Embassy in Praia, where the monarch attended a meeting with representatives of Spanish cooperation.
Queen Letizia’s second day in Cape Verde
Wearing her characteristic red aid worker’s vest and a white shirt from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), Letizia showed great interest in the projects that Spain is developing in the country.
Support for women’s empowerment
One of the most significant moments of the day was her visit to the town of Pedra Badejo, in the municipality of Santa Cruz. There, the Queen toured a sewing cooperative, a key project that offers many women the possibility of training and generating their own income.
Letizia had the opportunity to meet several of the workers and hear how this initiative has transformed their lives.
She also saw an exhibition of garments made by the cooperative’s seamstresses, highlighting the talent and effort of these women.
Later, her tour took her to a shelter for women and girls who are victims of gender-based violence.
This center, promoted by an international cooperation program, provides psychological, legal and social support to those who have suffered situations of abuse.
The Queen was especially interested in the stories of some of the residents and the work carried out by the professionals working on the project.
Sustainable development in Porto Mosquito
In the afternoon, Letizia moved to Porto Mosquito, where she visited a pilot program framed within the localization strategy of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This project, developed in conjunction with the United Nations, seeks to reduce inequalities and improve the quality of life in rural communities.
During her tour, the Queen was able to learn first-hand about the impact of Spanish cooperation in this region, hearing testimonies from beneficiaries and seeing how initiatives are being implemented to improve access to basic resources and economic opportunities.
Meeting with Spanish aid workers
To close the day, the monarch returned to Praia to meet with Spanish development workers working in Cape Verde. The meeting was attended by 32 aid workers, 21 of whom are women.
This meeting allowed the Queen to learn in depth about the work they do and the challenges they face in their daily work.
With this intense day, Letizia reaffirmed her commitment to international cooperation, highlighting the importance of supporting the most vulnerable communities and promoting initiatives focused on gender equality and sustainable development.
