Pepa Muñoz, one of the most recognized figures in Spanish gastronomy, has not only conquered the most demanding palates, but has also served some of the most prominent personalities, including the Royal Family.
Pepa has carved out an impressive career, which she now shares in her first book, ‘Un puchero de verdades’, where she offers a closer look at what her cooking is really like and reveals some secrets of her illustrious diners.
Chef reveals Queen Letizia’s strict eating habits
Among the most distinguished diners at El Qüenco de Pepa are King Felipe and Queen Letizia, as well as Queen Sofia.
Pepa Muñoz reveals some interesting details about her visits to the restaurant.
“Queen Letizia usually orders grilled fish and vegetables,” Pepa explains, adding a curious detail: “But never desserts, here she has not eaten sweet.”
It is well known that Queen Letizia is very strict with her diet, taking the utmost care of what she and her family consume.
On the other hand, King Felipe, according to Pepa, is much more relaxed about his food preferences:
“Felipe eats everything, he can use whatever you offer him.”
The chef recalls having served the king both in his time as prince and now in his role as monarch, and highlights his close and affectionate character.
Pepa also debunks a common myth about the queen emeritus:
“Queen Sofia has come here a lot, and she is not a vegetarian as they say; she doesn’t eat meat, but she does eat fish. She takes small portions, she doesn’t eat a lot,” revealed the chef.
The Outings of King Felipe and Queen Letizia
Outside of official engagements and vacations, it is not so common to see King Felipe and Queen Letizia going out to dinner.
They prefer more discreet activities such as going to the movies or taking a walk, which also facilitates the work of their security team.
However, during their summer stays in Marivent, it is tradition for the royal family to dine out together, visiting the same restaurant year after year.
On the other hand, it is more frequent for King Felipe to go out to lunch or dinner with his group of friends when Letizia is not present.
According to Pepa Muñoz, on these occasions, the king enjoys all kinds of dishes without worries, something that contrasts with the presence of the queen, who, as an expert in nutrition, meticulously controls the family diet, both at home and on her outings.
