Right or wrong? The controversial shoes worn by Queen Letizia to celebrate her 10th year as Queen alongside King Felipe

During the commemoration of King Felipe’s tenth anniversary of his proclamation, an aspect that captured attention beyond Queen Letizia’s attire was her choice of footwear.

Despite recovering from a fracture in one of her toes, the Queen Consort of Spain became the center of attention on social media due to her shoe selection for the occasion.

In the morning events, the Spanish royal family appeared on the balcony of the Royal Palace to offer greetings and observe the changing of the guard ceremony in the Plaza de la Armería.

Subsequently, a ceremony was held where the Civil Merit Medals were awarded to distinguished citizens for their contributions to the country.

For these events, Queen Letizia, mother of Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, known for her impeccable style, made her appearance wearing an elegant satin ensemble in blue.

This two-piece outfit, designed by the Spanish brand Maksu and crafted from natural silk, stood out for its elegance and fluid drape, once again showcasing the Queen’s exquisite taste in fashion.

The selected model was the ‘Almost Bare,’ featuring a metallic gold finish—a prudent choice given her known foot condition.

It’s important to note that Queen Letizia suffers from Morton’s neuroma and has a fractured phalanx in one of her left toes, which influenced her preference for barefoot-style footwear. Despite this, her choice was not without criticism.

On social media, a debate arose about the suitability of her shoes for such a significant occasion. Some users compared her selection to that of Infanta Sofía, who has demonstrated that it’s possible to opt for flat shoes without compromising elegance.

Likewise, on an Instagram account dedicated to royal fashion, opinions were divided: while some commentators questioned the Queen’s shoes, others expressed approval, highlighting the variety of perspectives on royal style.

    • “I know she has a foot condition but she could’ve worn a long dress with her flats. I just think sandals are completely inappropriate given the solemnity of the occasion.”
    • “Adore the blue ensemble. Love the flats however not sure about the sandals for this occasion.”
    • “A pair of ballerinas like Sofia’s in the same colour as her sandals would be a perfect match”.
    • “This color looks great on Queen Letizia. And I love that she does not feel compelled to wear heels if she’s unable to due to her foot condition. Good for her! I think she looks lovely.”
