Buckingham Palace has announced that the Royal Family will delay any events that might distract people from the upcoming election.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak revealed this Wednesday, May 22ndthat the UK will hold an election on July 4 to choose the next government, ending months of speculation.
To start the election process, the Prime Minister visited the King at Buckingham Palace to ask for Parliament to be dissolved.
Because of this announcement, Buckingham Palace confirmed that royal events will be postponed.
A palace spokesperson explained, “Following the Prime Minister’s statement this afternoon calling a General Election, The Royal Family will in accordance with normal procedure postpone engagements that may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign. Their Majesties send their sincere apologies to any of those who may be affected as a result.”
The Prime Minister and the King met for about 15 minutes in the King’s private audience room at Buckingham Palace, shortly after the King hosted young winners of the Prince’s Trust Awards.
This meeting was part of the Prime Minister’s regular weekly visit with the monarch.
With the election date set and the Royal Family stepping back from public events, the focus will now be on the upcoming vote and the future leadership of the country.
