The Paris Olympics have been the perfect occasion for European royals to show a more spontaneous and relaxed side.
Kings, queens, princes and princesses are seen cheering on the athletes, sharing gestures of joy and concern depending on the results. They are also close in their meetings with the athletes, wishing them the best for the competition.
In these events, they wear casual looks, moving away from their elegant but less comfortable styles, and make gestures that highlight their naturalness.
One of these gestures that has been repeated at these Olympic Games is the selfie. It is something as simple as taking the cell phone and taking a picture with a family member, which then the communication team of the Royal Household publishes on Instagram for all to see.
Recently, the latest to do so has been Máxima of the Netherlands, 53.
Maxima and Amalia of the Netherlands’ selfie
King William and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, along with their daughters Amalia and Alexia, have been among the most visible European royals at the Paris Olympics.
They have attended several competitions, and during one of them, held on the banks of the Seine River, Máxima and her eldest daughter Amalia took a selfie that was soon posted on the family’s Instagram profile.
In the photo, Máxima and Amalia appear very smiling, looking at the camera.
Amalia’s gesture reflects the complicity she has with her mother, an image reminiscent of others taken by King Felipe and Queen Letizia and their daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia.
Felipe, Letizia, Leonor and Sofia’s selfies
During their stay in Paris, the first to take a selfie were King Felipe and Queen Letizia.
At the opening ceremony, the king took out his cell phone and took a photo that reflected how much fun they were having at the start of the Olympic Games.
Days later, his daughters repeated the gesture twice over.
Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia took selfies twice during the competitions they attended.
These images were highly commented, especially because of the state of the screen protector of Princess Leonor’s cell phone, which was somewhat broken.
The strategy of the royals at the Paris Olympics
Although each selfie is different and its protagonists vary between married couples, sisters or mother and daughter, the goal is the same: to show themselves close and modern.
By taking these selfies, the royals seek to connect with the public and show their funniest and most natural side during these family events.
