What did Sofia of Wessex say at the Royal Variety Performance?
As part of these new royal engagements, Sofia and Prince Edward attended for the first time the Royal Variety Performance, a charity show that the royal family has attended for more than a century.
There the countess has said an unfortunate comment to one of the artists who was invited to the gala. Frank Skinner, British comedian, revealed the awkward moment he experienced with the mother of James, Viscount Severn.
After his performance, the comedian greeted the royals and expected some kind of comment thanking him for his show. However, he claimed that Sophia of Wessex told him that his show had not been up to par.
“You’d better not give up your day job,” she told him.
The comedian stressed that William and Harry’s aunt was insistent on his alleged poor performance, who also confessed that days before the gala he was “quite sick” and even “hurt to sing”.
“Have I been that bad?” the comedian asked the Countess. “Well, you know, you could tell that’s not what you do for a living.” Skinner, tried to justify himself, but Sofia insisted on the bad job.
According to the comedian part of the conversation between him and the countess went like this:
Sophie: “You normally work on TV, don’t you? You’re not used to live performances.”
Skinner: “Well, I’ve done live stuff. Monologues and things like that.”
Sophie: “Yeah, but you’ve never done anything as big as this.”
Skinner: “Well, last Sunday I performed at the Palladium.”
The man claims that the Countess gave him a gesture with her eyes as if trying to tell him not to try to argue with her. “It was a really awkward thing to do,” the artist stressed.
Edward’s behavior did not improve the situation either, as he also criticized the comedian.
