Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is at the center of a controversy due to her behavior during an official trip to Malta.
Together with her husband, Prince Edward, the Duchess arrived on the island to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Malta’s independence and to celebrate the shared heritage of Malta and the United Kingdom, as well as their continued collaboration.
During her four-day stay, one of the most significant stops was at Villa Guardamangia, the residence that housed the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip during their time in the region.
This event was historic, as the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh became the first members of the royal family to visit the villa since 1951.
Despite the solemnity and protocol of their visit, an unfortunate incident between Sophie and the Prime Minister of Malta has provoked criticism in the media and on social media.
What Happened with Sophie of Edinburgh and the Prime Minister of Malta?
The reason for the controversy revolves around a snub the Duchess apparently made when she failed to notice that the Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela, was trying to shake her hand.
The reception by the Prime Minister and his wife, Lydia Abela, was warm, and the four were photographed together.
However, in a moment that turned awkward, Sophie did not notice the Prime Minister’s gesture of greeting.
A video of the incident released on social media shows how, in the absence of a response from the Duchess, the Prime Minister took a step toward her, holding out his hand in an attempt to get her attention.
Although there is no indication that the Duchess intended to dismiss the greeting, the moment generated some unease among those who witnessed it.
After a few tense seconds, Sophie realized the situation and finally shook the Prime Minister’s hand.

However, the incident has highlighted the importance of attention to protocol in the realm of diplomacy and royal representation.
