The Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, has praised Prince Edward, who could not contain his emotions, during an official visit to Leeds.
This Sunday, Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, celebrates his 60th birthday, a very special date that his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, wanted to anticipate with a demonstration of love unusual among royals.
Sophie’s message for Prince Edward’s birthday
The couple traveled to Leeds, a city in the north of England, to attend the Community Sport and Recreation Awards, which recognize the work of sports and recreation organizations in the country.
During the ceremony, Sophie took the floor to dedicate some loving words to her husband, who was moved to tears listening to her.
The Duchess described Prince Edward as “the best of fathers, the most loving of husbands and still my best friend”. She also confessed how proud she is of him and how much she cherishes the life they have built together.
“Like an iceberg, what is seen above the water or in public is only a small proportion of what goes on behind the scenes.
“What is never seen or can ever be quantified is the effort spent on ensuring good governance for his patronages, encouraging people to support worthwhile causes, chairing committees, meeting chief executives and think tanks, writing papers, speeches, forewords, introductions, the list goes on.
“But whatever he is doing he gives 150% of himself, and if all else fails he gives any energy he has left out to our exhausted dogs or laying waste to the garden.”
“He is the best of fathers, the most loving of husbands and still is my best friend.”
Prince Edward, the youngest son of the late Queen Elizabeth II and brother of the current King Charles III, has been married to Sophie since 1999.

They will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary this June. The couple have two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex.
After his wife’s emotional speech, Prince Edward received a birthday cake in the shape of a tennis court, a nod to his passion for the sport. In fact, he met Sophie at a tennis match in 1993.
Sophie’s gesture surprised and touched many, as it is not common for royals to express their feelings in public.
However, the Duchess has shown that she is not afraid to show her love for her husband, whom she congratulated on his 60th birthday.
