The popularity of the Spanish royal family is in the background after details of new investigations against King Juan Carlos, Mrs. Sofía and even their grandchildren are targeted for the use of ‘opaque cards’ and the handling of large amounts of money.

The news of the investigation threw more fuel on the fire of the division and is that a group of Spaniards want a republican system of government while others continue to defend the monarchy.

Popularity of the Spanish royal family plummets

The financial scandals carried out by the emeritus king have become the starting point for the rejection of the Spanish royal family to grow, although the current kings perform “miracles” to divert attention and avoid controversies.

Spanish media report that rejection of the monarchy took off in 2012 when an image came to light of the then King Juan Carlos hunting elephants in Botswana while the country was submerged in a deep economic crisis and high unemployment rates.

To this is added his luxurious whims, the king was also exposed with business with offshore companies and “gifts” to his ex-lover Corinna Larsen.

The alleged financial crimes that are under investigation and that encouraged the monarch’s forced exile in the United Arab Emirates ended up staining the 40 years in which he was in charge of the House of Bourbons.

A severe setback for the royal house was the result of a survey carried out by a group of independent media that revealed that 40.9% of Spaniards would support the abolition of the monarchy in the country.

The repudiation of the royal family has increased over time.

However, “abolishing the monarchy” is not so easy, it is a long process that also includes important changes in the Constitution.
