Rob Burrow, celebrated rugby league figure, has been posthumously honored by Prince William, following his recent death at the age of 41 after a long battle with motor neurone disease.
Reflecting on the former England international’s impactful life, the Prince of Wales highlighted Burrow’s “huge heart,” noting his significant charitable contributions during his illness.
Prince William’s Tribute to Rugby Legend Rob Burrow
Prince William shared a personal tribute on the Kensington Palace X-account, stating, “A legend of Rugby League, Rob Burrow had a huge heart. He taught us, ‘in a world full of adversity, we must dare to dream.’ Catherine and I send our love to Lindsey, Jackson, Maya and Macy. W.”
Earlier this year, William visited Leeds’ Headingley Stadium to personally award Burrow his CBE, a poignant moment on the same pitch where Burrow had once excelled with the Leeds Rhinos.
During this visit, William also spent time with Kevin Sinfield, a close friend and former teammate of Burrow’s, as well as Burrow’s wife Lindsey and their three children, reports the Express.
Burrow’s illustrious career saw him lead his team to eight Super League trophies before retiring in 2017. Tragically, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) two years later.
Despite his diagnosis, Burrow dedicated himself to raising funds and awareness for the disease.
Together with Sinfield, he managed to raise enough money to create a new care center for those affected by the disease.
In recognition of his contributions, Burrow was honored with an MBE in the 2021 New Year’s Honors List, subsequently elevated to CBE in 2024, an award presented personally by the Prince of Wales.
The MND Association expressed its condolences in a heartfelt statement, “Our thoughts today are with Rob’s wife Lindsey, children Macy, Maya and Jackson, family and friends and the rugby community.”
In an emotional moment at Headingley, William presented honors to Burrow and Sinfield.
William praised Burrow’s efforts, “Thank you and congratulations for all the inspirational work you have done, Rob. You’ve been amazing, you really have. Everyone is proud of you and has been following your case and the money you have been raising. You have changed so many people’s lives with MND. We are all so proud of you.”
After presenting Lindsey with the medal, William posed for a photo with the family, capturing an emotional moment with Macy, 12, Maya, 8, and Jackson, 5.
