Trooping the Colour, one of the most important events of the British monarchy, faces an unprecedented change this year.
King Charles and Kate Middleton, leading figures in the royal family, have been diagnosed with cancer.
The news came as a shock to the nation, as both are the most prominent members of the royals. Earlier this year, they underwent surgeries: King Charles underwent prostate surgery and Kate Middleton underwent abdominal surgery.
On February 5, the 75-year-old monarch publicly shared his cancer diagnosis.
Just over a month later, on March 22, Kate Middleton also announced that she is suffering from the disease. Although the type of cancer they are facing has not been specified, both are receiving treatment.
However, King Charles resumed his official engagements on April 30, while information on Kate’s return is still awaited.
The situation has created uncertainty about the future of Trooping the Colour, especially considering the importance of the event, which celebrates the monarch’s official birthday.
Although Charles III’s birthday is Nov. 14, the ceremony is held annually, usually on the third Saturday in June, to take advantage of favorable weather.
Changes to Trooping the Colour 2024
With such an eventful year for British royalty, the first thing to mention is that the King will be attending the 2024 Trooping the Colour ceremony.
According to reports from The Sun, Charles III will inspect the troops from a carriage, as a precautionary measure during his recovery from illness.
News of the king’s presence was confirmed following his recent meeting with Dr. Uran Ferizi, ambassador of Albania, at Buckingham Palace.
King Charles has been gradually returning to his official duties, with the approval of his medical team.
Although he traditionally participates in the military parade on horseback and in uniform, this year, for health reasons, he will opt for an Ascot Landau carriage.
Other notable changes are that other members of the royal family, such as Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie of York and Zara Tindall, daughter of Princess Anne, are also expected to be present, bringing a new dynamic to the monarchy.
Kate’s attendance at the event has not yet been confirmed. However, it is unlikely that she will attend because Kensington Palace has already confirmed that she will not attend the key dress rehearsal of Trooping the Colour and will not play her usual role of inspecting officer at the traditional Colonel’s Review scheduled for June 8.
