A video of Meghan Markle discussing the nickname “Waity Katy,” once used by the British press to describe Princess Kate, has taken social media by storm, garnering over 475,500 views on TikTok.
In the clip, originally from Meghan’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess of Sussex reflects on the challenges Kate faced in the media spotlight before her marriage to Prince William.
Meghan Talks about the nickname “Waity Katy”
The term “Waity Katy” was a jab at the length of time Kate spent waiting for William to propose during their nearly decade-long courtship.
It epitomized a period when tabloids were filled with stories that undermined her character, labeling her as idle and unambitious.
Meghan acknowledged this, saying, “Kate was called Waity Katy, waiting to marry William. While I imagine that was really hard, and I do, I can’t picture what that felt like … this is not the same.”
While Meghan expressed empathy for Kate, she also highlighted the stark differences in their experiences, pointing out the racist undertones in the press coverage she received after joining the royal family.
During the Oprah interview, she revealed that the couple sought support from Harry’s family but were told to endure the negative press as it was “something all royals go through.”
Meghan, however, argued that rudeness and racism are entirely different issues.
The TikTok video reignited discussions about the contrasting media treatment of Meghan and Kate, with many commenters rallying behind the Princess of Wales.
One user remarked, “Yes, but she also had time to understand and learn how to be a princess. She got married knowing what was expected and doing it flawlessly.” Another added, “And now they call her HRH The Princess of Wales. Soon, she’ll be The Queen.”
This resurfaced conversation also brings to light how Kate has transformed public perception over the years.
In the early 2010s, even British columnists like Amanda Platell criticized her, with Platell once calling her “lazy” and accusing her of doing little beyond waiting for William’s proposal.
Following their 2011 wedding, Platell admitted in a column that she had misjudged Kate, praising her grace and unwavering commitment to royal duties.
