Harry of Sussex By Lillian Torres

Why Prince Harry’s Invictus Games are in jeopardy

    15 November, 2023
What about the 2024 Invictus Games

The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry, are in danger of not taking place.

These games are a Paralympic-style sporting event for military personnel who have been injured in war, or who suffer from physical or psychological sequelae.

The first edition of the Invictus Games was held in 2014 and, according to Harry, they aim to demonstrate the importance of sport in recovery, support rehabilitation and show life beyond disability.

However, there are certain reasons that would be in jeopardy for the holding of the next games, which would be in February 2025 in Canada.

What about the 2024 Invictus Games?

As reported by the English tabloid “Mail Online”, the executive director Peter Lawless, Canadian Olympic and Paralympic lawyer, was fired for no apparent reason.

Last October, Bill Cooper, the organization’s commercial director, was also dismissed.

These dismissals have highlighted other problems facing the Invictus Games, such as a lack of funding.

The cited media outlet claims that some organizers are concerned about the high cost of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s private security detail, which could significantly impact the budget.

Despite securing $30 million in government support from the Province of British Columbia and the Federal Government of Canada, no solution has been found to close the budget gap.

These obstacles represent a significant setback, especially considering that the Invictus Games are one of the most important events for Prince Harry after he retired from royal duties in 2020.
