The training ship Elcano has begun one of the most challenging stages of its voyage with Princess Leonor on board.

After setting sail from the port of Cadiz on January 11 and making two stops in Spain -Tenerife and Gran Canaria-, the ship now faces an extensive journey of more than 3,000 nautical miles to Salvador de Bahia, Brazil.

When will Princess Leonor arrive in Brazil?

Arrival is scheduled for February 14, coinciding with Valentine’s Day.

This will be the first international stopover on the itinerary, a milestone awaited by both the crew and the heiress to the throne.

During the 22 days they will spend at sea without setting foot on land, Leonor and her fellow midshipmen will live an experience that promises to be intense and enriching.

Routine on board: study, music and creativity

Daily life on the Elcano combines a rigorous study program with activities designed to keep spirits high.

One of the most unique forms of entertainment is the ship’s brass band, composed of four or five military professionals.

Every night they offer concerts with repertoires ranging from classical music to pop, salsa, rock and country, always with famous songs that manage to liven up the day.

Another favorite pastime is the Telelcano, a weekly activity in which the midshipmen prepare a news program that mixes current events with comedy sketches about situations on board.

Although it initially had an informative purpose, nowadays it functions more as a form of recreation and camaraderie among the crew members.

    Salvador da Bahia and beyond

Salvador de Bahia will be the third city of the eleven that make up the Elcano’s route.

After its stay in the Brazilian port, from February 14 to 19, the ship will continue its journey to Montevideo, in Uruguay, before moving on to Latin America and the Caribbean.

The itinerary includes stops in Punta Arenas, Valparaiso, Lima, Panama City, Cartagena de Indias, Santo Domingo and, finally, New York, where it is expected to dock in early June to close this unforgettable international experience.

With this voyage, Princess Leonor will experience firsthand what it means to be at sea for weeks, facing challenges that will undoubtedly mark a before and after in her life.
