Princess Anne made a surprise visit to New York City that included a ride on one of the Big Apple’s most iconic methods of public transportation: the ferry.
Last Tuesday, October 4, the New York Department of Transportation shared a photo on Twitter of Queen Elizabeth’s 72-year-old daughter aboard the Staten Island Ferry. This vessel transports commuters and passengers between lower Manhattan and the borough of Staten Island for free every day.
“We are pleased to welcome Her Royal Highness Princess Anne to the #StatenIslandFerry today,” the DOT wrote on Twitter alongside the photo, which shows the Princess looking out over the waters of New York Harbor.
What is Princess Anne doing in New York?
Queen Elizabeth’s only daughter arrived in New York on a flight to John F. Kennedy International Airport from London last Monday. The sister of King Charles was a guest at a gala dinner for the English Speaking Union of the United States. The next day, she visited the National Lighthouse Museum in St. George, Staten Island.
Princess Anne’s visit came nearly 65 years after Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip toured Staten Island during a trip to the United States on October 21, 1957.
Princess Anne’s trip to New York had been scheduled since before Queen Elizabeth’s death.
