Since Princess Sofia graduated from UWC Atlantic College on May 24, the youngest daughter of the king and queen has not been seen in public.
Although the Royal Household shared some family photos on that occasion, her last appearance in Spain was on Three Kings Day, when she was photographed entering her maternal grandfather’s home in Madrid.
Her prolonged absence has begun to raise questions about her role within the royal family.
Where Is Princess Sofia?
Spanish journalist Pilar Eyre has been particularly critical of this silence. In her opinion, the monarchy cannot do without a figure like Sofia, especially when Leonor is hogging all the institutional attention.
She argues that her active participation would strengthen the image of the institution and ease the burden on the heiress.
Eyre points out that there is a unique bond of trust between sisters that should also have a place in public life.
So far, all that is known is that Sofia will continue her university studies in Spain, possibly at the Autonomous University of Madrid, where she would study law and economics.
Although the option of continuing her education abroad was considered, it was ruled out by her parents. The decision is partly due to the need to prepare her adequately as a possible future queen if circumstances require it.
She is expected to resume her public schedule this summer. She is scheduled to attend the closing ceremony of Princess Leonor’s military training on July 16, as well as the Princess of Girona Awards a week later.
Sofia will also join the family during their vacation in Palma.
