King Charles and Queen Camilla have been in the spotlight on social media for their gestures related to Ramadan, which began this Friday, February 28.
These actions have sparked an interesting debate, though not without controversy.
To show their support for the Muslim community, the King and Queen shared a video in which they are seen packing dates, a traditional food used to break the fast at sunset during the holy month.
According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), these dates were to be sent to local hospitals for Iftar, the meal marking the end of the daily fast.
Additionally, on the same day, Charles III and Camilla held a discussion with a group of Muslim women, including Zainab Alema, a rugby player, and Hajera Memon, a writer.
They also exchanged words with Syrian chef Alarnab at his restaurant, Imad’s Syrian Kitchen.
Not stopping there, the sovereigns posted another message on social media expressing their support for Ramadan, wishing “all Muslims in the UK, the Commonwealth, and around the world a blessed and peaceful Ramadan.”
However, not everyone welcomed these gestures.
Why are King Charles and Queen Camilla facing criticism?
While they have received gratitude from many, they have also faced criticism from those who do not practice Islam.
Several users expressed their discontent, questioning why nothing was said about St. David’s Day, celebrated on March 1.

“Nothing for St. David’s Day?”, “Maybe something about St. David’s Day? No?”, were some of the reactions on Instagram.
Others wrote:
- “England is a Christian country.”
- “I’m absolutely gobsmacked that this has been forgotten by the once Prince of Wales! I’ve always been a Royalist, but I honestly think he couldn’t care less about us!”
- “I think his advisers or social media team are hijacking it for their own agenda. I’m afraid my affection for the monarchy has been dwindling since we lost Queen Elizabeth II.”
- “Celebrating the religion and culture that destroyed your country? Interesting.”

- “Britain is a Christian country. How can you encourage a Muslim in this country?”
- “I like the royal family, but really? What a load of rubbish.”
- “Stop promoting Islam. We don’t want it here.”
- “The King is the head of the Church of England, which is an Anglican church. Why on earth did he authorize this ‘Ramadan’ post to be published in his name?”
The King and Queen’s attempts to show inclusiveness have sparked both gratitude and reproach, reflecting the complexities of multiculturalism in the UK.
