It is widely known that Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia have grown up relatively isolated from the rest of King Felipe VI’s family.
One only needs to see the images of the recent gathering of almost all the Borbones at the graduation of Infanta Cristina’s daughter, Irene, to understand that the future queen has minimal contact with anyone.
Some attribute this estrangement to Queen Letizia, accusing her of prioritizing the crown over family. It is no secret that many of Felipe’s relatives have been involved in controversies that have tarnished the image of the monarchy.
Princess Leonor increasingly distant from King Felipe’s family
Initially, Letizia was not warmly welcomed into the Spanish royal family. She was a commoner, divorced, with separated parents, and a former news anchor.
Her arrival was seen as a disaster for the Spanish monarchy. However, she has proven that being a queen is not determined by birth but by one’s actions. She has succeeded in overshadowing Sofia, who has long been in her shadow.
According to the Spanish news portal El Nacional, it is Queen Letizia who has decided to keep Princess of Asturias away from her paternal grandparents, aunts, and cousins. They haven’t seen each other in years, and the relationship is completely nonexistent.
The royal family is fractured. Felipe and Letizia make an effort to avoid any controversial family members, and Letizia is resolute in preserving the crown for the sake of her daughter, Leonor, who is expected to become the next Head of State in the future.
