Princess Leonor has been the subject of multiple accolades in her most recent appearances at royal events, thanks to her style.
However, according to fashion experts, her wardrobe performance is not as exceptional as many might assume.
Unlike Queen Letizia, who rarely fails in her stylistic choices, 18-year-old Princess Leonor is in the process of defining her own style as she assumes an increasingly prominent role as the future queen of Spain.
Recently, Leonor and her family participated in several events related to the Princess of Asturias Awards.
These activities included the ceremony to present honors to Leonor, a concert prior to the awards ceremony, a reception with the winners, the awards ceremony itself, and finally, a visit to the town of Sotres.
At each of these events, the family wore different outfits in keeping with protocol, but it was Leonor’s style that attracted the most attention.
Why Is Princess Leonor’s Style Criticized?
Criticism of the heir to the throne’s wardrobe has been notorious. Although her stylistic choices have not gone unnoticed, the variety of her outfits, which include a formal suit, a tulle skirt, and a tweed mini dress, suggest that the young woman is still in the process of finding her essence in the fashion world.
About to turn 19, it is difficult to clearly identify the style of the firstborn of King Felipe and Queen Letizia. Lectura magazine consulted expert Asun Domínguez, who offered a different perspective.
“The headlines I have seen in the press have surprised me a lot because they do not reflect my opinion.”
Domínguez commented, emphasizing that the princess seems not to have defined her style yet. Despite Leonor’s beauty and athletic figure, the expert stated that not all styles suit her equally, leading her to question the effectiveness of the team of stylists working with her, compared to the attention to detail seen in Queen Letizia.
While Queen Letizia always presents herself impeccably, “without a wrinkle,” according to Domínguez, each of her garments is tailored precisely to her figure, which contrasts with the less considered choices of Leonor and her sister Sofía, who tend to resort to standard sizes that may not fit properly.
For example, the baby blue suit the princess chose was rated as “correct,” but it fit inappropriately at the sleeves, causing the lapel to ride up.
Dominguez also disapproved of the outfit Leonor wore to the pre-awards concert, arguing that the combination of garments chosen was unfortunate for her figure, causing her to lose upper body definition and highlighting a voluminous skirt that shortened her silhouette.
She suggested that, had she paired the skirt with a peplum-cut jacket, the result would have been optimal.
The use of black tights was also not approved by the fashion expert, who considers that this style contributed to an “unflattering and not at all elegant” look.
As for Leonor’s stylistic choice during the Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony, the expert believes that, although “the image is correct,” it cannot be said that she looks “spectacular,” since she really is not.
Regarding the design of the outfit, Asun points out that it lacks outstanding elements, especially considering the prominence expected at the gala.
She criticizes that “they should have worked more on the design,” suggesting that wider sleeves, a less sideways center front, and button placement at the waist instead of under the chest would have improved the ensemble.
After reviewing Leonor’s most notable looks in Asturias, Asun Domínguez wonders who is really behind her style, evidencing a clear distance from the perfection that characterizes Queen Letizia.
Although Princess Leonor has begun to make a name for herself in the fashion world, she is still on her way to defining a style of her own that lives up to the expectations that come with her position.
