The emeritus King Juan Carlos I wants to return to Spain to participate in the Sanxenxo regattas in May, as revealed by journalist Juan Luis Galiacho in ‘Cuatro al día’. The former monarch would have asked for his boat, the Bribón, to be prepared for the occasion.
Juan Carlos would have communicated to his son Felipe VI his intention to travel to Spain to participate in the Sanxenxo regattas to be held on May 19, 20 and 21, an activity that he is passionate about and that he already did last summer.
However, his decision does not have the support of his son Felipe, with whom he maintains an increasingly distant and conflictive relationship. According to Galiacho, father and son have had several direct confrontations in the last week and communication between them is not the best.
Will King Juan Carlos return to Spain this year?
The return of the king emeritus is not a surprise for the Royal House, which already knew his plans since last year. In fact, Juan Carlos I himself answered “Well, surely” when asked if he would be seen in Spain soon.
The former monarch’s return to Spain could also be conditioned by his state of health, which at 85 years of age may vary. However, Juan Carlos is currently in good health and is not suffering from any pain, so he is looking forward to resuming his sailing hobby.
The Spanish Royal Family has not reacted publicly to the possible return of the emeritus king, who has been in exile in Abu Dhabi since August 2020 due to his financial scandals. His return could pose a new challenge to the image of the monarchy, according to Galiacho
