The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended this Monday, July 18, at the UN headquarters in New York for events related to the day of the South African leader, Nelson Mandela.
Prince Harry used his speech at the United Nations (UN) to make some revelations about his relationship with his wife Meghan Markle and his mother Princess Diana.
What did Prince Harry say in his speech at the United Nations?
At first, Prince Harry spoke about his passion for Africa since his first visit at the age of 13, including how it connected him with two important women in his life: his wife, Meghan, and his mother, Princess Diana.
“For most of my life, it has been my lifeline, a place where I found peace and healing time and time again,” Prince Harry said. “It’s where I felt closest to my mother and sought comfort after her death, and where I knew I had found a kindred spirit in my wife.”
Meghan, 40, and Prince Harry, 37, traveled to Africa together several times, including a visit to Botswana early in their relationship in the summer of 2016, after just two dates over two consecutive days in London.

In his speech, Prince Harry also recalled a photo of Princess Diana and Mandela taken in 1997 that is “on my wall and in my heart every day” that was given to him by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
“When I first saw the picture, what jumped out was the joy on my mother’s face. The joy, even the chutzpah,” Harry said. “The sheer delight of communing with another soul so committed to the service of humanity.
He went on to say that Mandela was also “radiant” despite all the hardships he endured.
“Here was a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders, asked to heal his country from the wreckage of its past and transform it for the future, a man who had endured the very worst of humanity, vicious racism and state-sponsored brutality,” Harry said.
“Yet, in that photo and so many others, he is still beaming. Still able to see the goodness in humanity. Still buoyant with a beautiful spirit that lifted everyone around him,” he added.
Meghan and Harry’s trip to New York is the first high-profile foray for the couple since they relinquished their royal duties in 2020.
